Meinertzhagen's Haversack
This term came up during 1st world war. Richard Meinertzhagen was a British Army Intelligence Officer during the First World War. In 1917 he arranged for an Australian courier to "lose" a haversack(a bag carried on the back mainly by soldiers) containing secret documents, in the Sinai Desert, so they could be captured by the Ottoman Army. The secret documents were of course forgeries(fake), containing misleading information about a forthcoming British offensive. The offensive was successful and Meinettzhagen claimed this was largely due to his misinformation.
It should be noted that the existence of the haversack, and of Meinertzhagen's involvement, has been disputed. Nevertheless the principal of planting or leaking false information to mislead an opponent is widespread (in military, intelligence and business circles) and Meinertzhagen's Haversack is often cited as an example.
Be curious, not judgmental.
